“The New Negro Has No Fear.”

Followers of Marcus Garvey paraded at 125th Street and Lenox Avenue in Harlem during an August 1920 Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) convention. Garvey’s organization enrolled a million members in hundreds of branches throughout the United States. Numerous UNIA nationalist parades brought out thousands of African Americans in support of the cause of economic and cultural independence.
