Relocation Poster - Chicagoland Indians Get Good Jobs

Since the founding of the nation, the U.S. government sought control over the land claimed by Native nations through a series of treaties, policies, and laws. In the 1950s and 1960s, these policies continued through a concerted effort to eliminate the sovereign status of over one hundred Indigenous nations and to reclaim over one million acres of Native lands. As part of this termination policy, the U.S. government encouraged Native peoples to move from reservations to urban areas. Relocation offices in major cities promised jobs, housing, and financial assistance, but many of the Native Americans who left the reservation for cities found inadequate housing options, discrimination in employment, a lack of health care, and hostility toward Native Americans by social service agencies, the police, and the court system.
