“Halloween, 1936"

Most newspaper political cartoonists, reflecting the Republican allegiances of their publishers, were hostile to FDR and the New Deal, They also were part of an older generation of cartoonists. J. N. “Ding” Darling, born in 1876, had long been ranked as one of the country’s notable graphic commentators. A well-known conservative Republican, his work in the New York Herald Tribune and Des Moines Register was mercilessly anti-New Deal. His 1936 Halloween cartoon depicted FDR and his cabinet as young troublemakers making off with an outhouse marked “private rights” (with a hapless figure, standing in for the U.S. public, trapped inside), but most of his anti–New Deal cartoons lacked that jocularity.
